In 2009, Ian received the faculty of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences teaching excellence award in recognition of his contribution to quality learning and teaching. Faced with the need to engage students in developing higher-order thinking and analysis skills, Ian employed an active student-centered approach to teaching, where the teacher takes the role of facilitator rather than authority, and students have the opportunity to discover knowledge. Ian's achievements were recognised by Monash University in 2010, receiving the Vice Chancellor's award for Teaching Excellence. His passion and expertise in active learning lead to his appointment as Director, learning and teaching where he is co-leading his faculty’s transition to active learning and implementation of the university BLBT agenda.
His 3D virtual laboratory, Pharmatopia, is used in pharmacy schools around the world and has been implemented internationally by GSK’s Global Manufacturing and Supply network. Ian is an inaugural member of the Australian Pharmacy Council’s Editorial Group and is the International Pharmacy Federation’s Education Domain Lead for E-platforms and IT-based learning.
In his spare time, Ian supports his two teenage boys learning the skills to overcome a zombie invasion and with his 15 year old daughter enjoys learning of the latest life difficulties facing the Kardashian family.
